Terry Henderson, Cowboy Poet
|
Terry
Henderson has been a cowboy poet and columnist for several years.
Her work is primarily a diary of her ranch experiences. Terry first
began keeping track of her poetry in a spiral notebook, hidden in
her bedroom. When she realized it was socially acceptable to be a
cowboy poet, she came out of the closet.
Terry currently writes a weekly column for the Douglas Budget
on rural life. She is a regular free lance contributor to the Wyoming
Livestock Roundup. Terry's poetry has even found a place in
a Harlequin super romance, Southern Reason, Western Rhyme,
by Sharon Brondos. Terry has entertained as far away as Grand Junction,
CO, Elko, NV, and Redding, CA. She has been on the night show at the
Riverton Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Terry has an essay included in the
Houghton-Mifflin book, Leanin' Into The Wind, edited
by Linda Hasselstrom, Nancy Curtis, and Gaydell Collier. Released
this year (Feb 2001), Cowgirl Poetry, edited by Virginia
Bennett, includes a poem from Terry Henderson. In addition, Terry
has three cowboy poetry chapbooks published of her own. Terry has
presented several cowboy poetry programs in grade schools around Wyoming.
Along with being a cowboy poet, Terry is a full time rancher, 4-H
leader, substitute teacher, wife, mom, grandmother (soon to be #5),
and rural volunteer firefighter. Terry and Frank run a 6x6 pumper
during the summer fire season. She also works on local church and
civic committees.
During the summer, Terry and her husband, Frank, run the Wyoming School
of Ranching, which offers three University of Wyoming credits for
staying a week an their ranch to learn about ranching. In her spare
time, Terry plays the banjo, sews, reads, and travels to Arizona and
Oklahoma to visit her grandchildren.
