Yvonne Hollenbeck, Poet
|
A rising star in the world of cowboy poetry, Yvonne Hollenbeck performs
throughout the upper Midwest, captivating audiences in her wake.
She is fast becoming one of the most published cowgirl poets in
the West.
A 3-generations-old family ranch is home toYvonne and her husband,
Glen. Together, they raise cattle and quarter horses. Clearfield,
South Dakota, in the southcentral part of the state, is their address.
More specifically, they're 30 miles from Winner, S. D. and 50 miles
from Valentine, Neb., the closest towns with a post office, fire
department, doctor, and grocery store.
Yvonne, the daughter of a National Champion Old-Time Fiddler was
herself a professional musician. She was a show organist far many
of the large fairs and rodeos across the country. Today she reins
her talents toward spoiling her grandchildren, writing poetry and
creating award-winning, heirloom-quality quilts.
Her poetry reflects everyday experiences that arise while sharing
the range with Glen and their neighbors. However, a fleeting moment
or simple event may also stir her pen to action.
Mostly humorous in nature, her poems take a turn toward the serious
side, especially the stories of her mother's and grandmothers' lives.
From homesteading to the present, Yvonne writes about women on the
ranches of the Great Plains.
Red Steagall has read her poems on his weekly radio show, including
"Where the Sweetest Grasses Grow," a tribute to the late
South Dakota Troubadour Kyle Evans, and "The Little Red Geranium,"
an inspirational portrait of the connections shared among pioneer
families.
