Yampa Valley Boys, Western Musicians
|
Your journey back to the old west will
feature all acoustic music, plus stories and poems about the cowboy---his
ways, his life, his humor, his horse (of course!) and, sometimes,
his favorite cowgirl.
Formatted as an old time radio show, yet as intimate as a campfire
sing-along, the YAMPA VALLEY BOYS will bring you laughter, maybe
a tear or two, and always a good time. Youngsters and old timers,
whatever the occasion, have been captivated by the unique manner
in which the YAMPA VALLEY BOYS preserve some of our Western heritage.
JOHN
FISHER has been involved in folk and old time music since the
early 1960's. John can be considered as an entertainer in the medium,
as he is comfortable singing the tunes with banjo, guitar, mandolin,
fiddle, or autoharp accompaniment.
The 5 string banjo has always been his primary instrument and the
old time music his genre. John currently plays an Ome Golden Minstrel
Jubilee banjo, designed after the model sold by William Brucher
& Sons in 1845, 6-String Banjo, and Octave Mandolin.
He performed on banjo and twelve string guitar with several folk
groups during the 60's and 70's, and briefly traveled Northern Minnesota,
and North Dakota with a troupe of independent folk music acts called
Folk North.
He was involved with the Wyoming Old Time Fiddlers Association
in the 70's and 80's, while living in Riverton, Wyoming. He is also
a member of the Colorado Bluegrass Music Association. He is a regular
entertainer at All Seasons - Bar Lazy L , Elk River Guest Ranch,
and Vista Verde Guest Ranch. John was on the roster of Cowboy entertainers
for the 1998 and 1999 Grand Olde West Days in Craig, Colorado.
John performs for school, business, and benefit functions in the
Yampa Valley Area and has performed cowboy music and poetry with
area cowboy poets.
John placed in the Grande Old West Days, Country and Old Time Music
Festival at Craig, Colorado in 1990 and 1991. In 1995, John placed
second in the banjo competition at the 11th Annual High Plains Old
Time Music Festival, at Douglas, Wyoming. Judges comment on the
clear, melodic character of his frailing banjo style. He was also
an Official Musician for the prestigious Lander One Shot Antelope
Hunt.
His performances are characterized as light, and bouncy, with lots
of humorous songs and poems. Generally performing Cowboy songs and
Classic Old Time Cowboy poetry, in traditional old time Cowboy dress,
John aims his performances to audiences of all ages, in a family
atmosphere (i.e. "G" rated).
John is also an experienced charity auctioneer. He has assisted
such groups as Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation Snow Ball,
Walker-Lundquist Golf Tournament, Hospice, Morning Star Foundation,
Steamboat Chamber Ambassadors, Strings in the Mountains, Perry Mansfield,
and the Steamboat Arts Council.
STEVE
JONES, alias The Howling Coyote, is a guitar playing, singer-song
writer. As a solo performer, Steve can take you from (Ghost) Riders
In The Sky, to Rocky Mountain High, to Save The Cowboy, plus many
more classic cowboy, contemporary and original songs." Some have
compared Steve's voice and style, as a solo performer, to John Denver.
Steve has released three solo CD albums, "From This Valley",
in 2000, "Sweet Memories and Tears", in 2001 and "Comin
Home" in 2002. Most of the tracks on each of these albums were
written by Steve. Included on the "Sweet Memories and Tears"
album is a tribute song to John Denver.
Steve has performed as a solo at many of the venues listed on the
Yampa Valley Boys page. Additionally, Steve has worked with The
Prickly Pair, a highly rated cowboy band out of Dubois, Wyoming,
performing at guest ranches and public concerts in Wyoming, Utah
and Colorado. In October 2001, Steve was the top performer at the
John Denver Memorial Celebration held in Salida, CO.
