(August 31, 2007) -- Mark Korir set the new Wyoming Invitational course record at Jacoby Golf Course while leading the men to a third place finish Friday evening in Laramie, Wyoming. The Cowgirls finished second behind a third place finish by senior Gretchen Johnson.
"Mark Korir set the stage, he is one of the top runners coming back in the Mountain West Conference and in the region and of course ran like an All-American," said head coach Randy Cole. "He sets the tone for all the other great runners in the conference."
As for the men’s overall team competition, the Air Force Academy won the meet finishing with 32 points, just ahead of Colorado State which finished with 39 overall points. Wyoming placed third with 63 points, followed by Northern Colorado with 119 points.
Korir finished with a time of 21:42.7, a new record at Jacoby Golf Course. Freshman Seth Grossman made a big impact for the pokes by finishing in tenth place with a time of 22:40 in his Wyoming debut.
As a team, the Wyoming women finished second overall with 47 points with Johnson leading the way and a third place finish with a time of 14:51. Johnson was followed by sophomore Benna Dooley who finished ninth with a time of 15:29, while senior Nikki Peterson crossed the line in tenth with a time of 15:44.
"On the women’s side, you are running against one of the premier teams in the conference in Colorado State," Cole continued. "They have a great team and a great tradition and if we are able to compete with them then we will be able to compete at the national level."
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will take two weeks off before heading to Bozeman, Montana to compete in the Montana State Invitational September 15th.
