Cowgirl Soccer Wins Season Opener Despite Rough Match
(August 31, 2007) -- Junior Tamika Wilson scored her first goal of the year (ninth of her career) to propel the Wyoming Cowgirls past the Western Carolina Catamounts 1-0 at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex Friday evening in Laramie, Wyoming. The Cowgirls open up the year 1-0-0 while the Catamounts fall to 0-1-0.

"I’m very pleased with the way our girls played tonight," head coach Anne Moore said. "It was a very physical match, but the girls kept their composure and played through it."

The first half set the tone for the entire game with 23 fouls being committed, 15 for the Catamounts and eight for the Cowgirls. The game ended with a total of 44 fouls and five yellow cards.

"Our girls played like they were panicked in the first half with how physical the game was," Moore continued. "We had a great team effort in the second half to play through it and do what we needed to do to get the win."

Wilson scored the game winner on a breakaway from a beautiful through pass from freshman Kayla Davis at the 69:43 mark to give the Cowgirls the lift they needed for the win.

The Cowgirls will take the rest of the weekend off before heading to Harrisonburg, Virginia for the James Madison University Tournament on September 7-9. Wyoming will open the tournament on Friday, September 7 against James Madison at 5:30 p.m.

"We need to keep up our intensity in practice because the games this coming weekend will be very physical," Moore added. "We will have to continue to play our game and go down there ready for the challenge."

Cowgirl Soccer Loses In Opening Round of Comfort Inn Invitational -- James Madison defeats Cowgirls 3-1.
Laramie, Wyo. (September 7, 2007) -- The University of Wyoming Cowgirl Soccer team was defeated by the James Madison Dukes 3-1 in the opening round of the Comfort Inn Invitational Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va. on Friday night. Wyoming falls to 1-1-0 on the season while the Dukes improved to 4-0-0.

“Tonight’s match was very exciting and suspenseful,” head coach Anne Moore said. “There was a lot of speed and both teams played well enough to win.”

Wyoming junior Tamika Wilson scored Wyoming’s lone goal at the 8:15 mark in the second half on a shot just inside the penalty box. Sophomore Emily Layton was credited with an assist on the play.

James Madison took an early 1-0 lead in the first half and then scored two more goals late in the second half to give the Dukes the 3-1 victory. JMU freshman Teresa Rynier scored two goals and assisted on the third score for the Dukes.

“James Madison is a team that likes to play the ball over the top and use their speed to score and that’s what they did tonight,” Moore continued. “Their keeper came up with some great saves and we can’t give the other team so many opportunities to win.”

Wyoming will take on the Hofstra Pride tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the Cowgirls final game of the Comfort Inn Invitational. Hofstra improved their record to 3-0-0 by defeating Richmond 2-1 Friday night.
