Cowgirl Soccer Remains Undefeated at Home -- Wyoming beats Utah Valley State 3-2.
Laramie, Wyo. (September 14, 2007) -- Cowgirl junior Amanda Lathrop scored her first two goals of the season and sophomore Emily Layton added her first as the Wyoming Cowgirls defeated the Utah Valley State Wolverines 3-2 at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex in Laramie on Friday night. Wyoming improves to 2-2-0 on the season while UVSC slips to 0-3-1.
“UVSC tried to take us out of our game today, but our girls fought hard and played ‘Wyoming Soccer’ to get the win,” head coach Anne Moore said.
Wyoming jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Layton scored her first goal of the season (fourth of her career) on a free kick from 30 yards out at the 3:26 mark. UVSC tied the game at the 32:59 mark on a goal by freshman Sara Walker, her first of the year.
“I thought we played solid in the first half and jumped out to the early lead. We just made that one mistake and it cost us,” Moore continued.
The Cowgirls came out in the second half determined to play their game and control the ball better. Wyoming’s Lathrop scored her first goal of the season (sixth of her career) at the 52:24 mark to regain the lead. The Wolverines did not give up and continued to put pressure on Wyoming. UVSC freshman Katy Turner scored her first goal of the season at the 57:41 mark to answer the Cowgirls and tie the game.
Lathrop scored her second goal of the game at the 79:13 mark which proved to be the game-winner giving the Cowgirls their second win of the year.
“The second half I thought we did a much better job of controlling the ball and playing it on the ground instead of in the air,” Moore said. “Both Emily (Layton) and Amanda (Lathrop) stepped up and played really well for us today. They both did a great job.”
Wyoming will try to defend their undefeated record at home on Sunday as they face the Fresno State Bulldogs at 12 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
